When to Replace Fusion Splicer Electrodes, and How to Do It

When to Replace Fusion Splicer Electrodes, and How to Do It

Fusion splicer electrodes are the part of the splicer that does the real work. Every splice relies on a precise, stable arc between their tips, and every arc wears them down a little. Worn electrodes are one of the most common reasons we see for rising splice loss and repeated errors, yet they are also one of the cheapest and quickest parts to replace.

This guide explains how long electrodes last, how to set your splicer to warn you in good time and how to replace them step by step.

Why electrode condition matters

As the arc count rises, the electrode tips erode and pick up silica deposits. The arc becomes less focused and less consistent, and that shows up in the splice. Typical effects are:

  • Higher splice loss. An uneven arc heats the fibre ends less evenly, which leads to higher and less predictable loss.
  • More splice errors. Bubbles, separation and thin splices become more frequent, and more splices need to be remade.
  • Unstable arc calibration. Calibration results start to drift from one day to the next.
  • Extra wear elsewhere. Running the splicer with worn electrodes puts unnecessary strain on other components.

On a large FTTP build a few extra remade splices per closure soon add up to hours of lost time. Replacing electrodes on schedule is far cheaper.

How many arcs do electrodes last?

For INNO fusion splicers we recommend replacing the electrodes once the arc count exceeds 5,500 arcs. This keeps splice quality consistent and leaves a safety margin before performance drops noticeably.

Harsh conditions can shorten that life. Dusty sites, high humidity and frequent use of high-power splice programmes all wear electrodes faster, so treat 5,500 as an upper limit rather than a target.

Set caution and warning alerts

INNO splicers can remind you before the electrodes reach their limit. We recommend two thresholds.

AlertRecommended settingMessage on screenWhat to do
Electrode Caution4,500 arcsCaution! Replace electrodesOrder a new pair so it is ready
Electrode Warning5,500 arcsWarning! Replace electrodesReplace the electrodes now

If you manage several splicers, View Pro Manager shows the arc count of every connected device in one place, so replacements can be planned rather than discovered on site.

How to check the arc count and replace the electrodes

Step 1. Open the maintenance menu

From the main menu, go to [Maintenance Menu].

Step 2. Check the arc count

Select [Replace Electrodes] and then [Electrode Thresholds]. The current arc count is shown here, and you can set the caution and warning levels.

Step 3. Fit the new electrodes

  • Switch the splicer off.
  • Remove the old electrodes as described in your user manual, using the correct tool.
  • Insert the new electrodes and make sure they are seated and aligned correctly.
  • Avoid touching the electrode tips with your fingers or any tool.

Step 4. Reset the counter and stabilise

  • Reset the arc count in the [Electrode Thresholds] menu.
  • Run the electrode stabilisation routine if your model offers one, then run an arc calibration.

After this, make a test splice and check the estimated loss before going back to live work.

Tips for longer electrode life

  • Use genuine electrodes. Electrodes made for your splicer model give the correct gap and arc shape. Non-genuine parts often look similar but behave differently.
  • Keep them clean. Remove deposits with the cleaning routine or a clean, lint-free swab during regular maintenance.
  • Check the count regularly. Make it part of your weekly checks rather than waiting for the warning.
  • Store spares properly. Keep spare electrodes in their packaging, somewhere clean and dry. Poor storage can damage them before they are ever used.

Order electrodes or book a service

We hold genuine INNO E-70 and E-50 electrodes in UK stock, and orders are dispatched the same or next working day to customers in the UK and Ireland. Not sure which electrodes fit your splicer? Contact us with your model and we will confirm.

If new electrodes and a fresh calibration do not solve the problem, the cause may lie elsewhere. Our service and repair centre replaces electrodes as part of every full service and returns most splicers within 3 working days. For help reading the error messages themselves, see our guide to fusion splicing problems.

How many arcs do fusion splicer electrodes last?

For INNO fusion splicers we recommend replacing the electrodes once the arc count passes 5,500. Setting a caution alert at 4,500 arcs gives you time to order a new pair before quality starts to drop.

What are the signs of worn electrodes?

Common signs are unstable or weak arcs, more frequent bubbles and separation errors, rising splice loss and arc calibration results that drift from day to day.

Can I clean electrodes instead of replacing them?

Cleaning removes deposits and can restore a stable arc for a while, but it does not reverse wear. Once the electrodes reach their arc limit they should be replaced.

Which electrodes fit my INNO splicer?

INNO uses different electrode types across its range, including the E-70 and E-50. Check your user manual or send us your model and we will confirm the right part. All electrodes are held in UK stock.
